About This Week’s Talented Artists:
DJ REID SPEED
When Reid Speed began spinning records in 1996, she first generated curiosity as one of few female DJs at the time. However, she quickly earned respect for her talent in the highly competitive NYC scene. By the summer of 1997 she was working with rave promoters, Stuck on Earth Promotions and the following year as a member of the Direct Drive crew. At these events she cut her teeth playing alongside the top names in the genre. 1998 found Reid working at DJ Dara’s Breakbeat Science, the first record store in the United States to specialize in drum & bass records. Capitalizing on their large and widespread customer base, her demos soon spread, which led to touring in the United States, Puerto Rico, Ireland, Canada, and Mexico. A 1998 visit to England sparked an interest in UK garage which inspired her to promote her own events. The 2001 release of her debut mix CD, Resonance, yielded the singles “Mr Fix It” with Ming & FS, and “Picture This” with DJ Seen. In support of the release, a 40-date tour sponsored by Mixer magazine introduced her sound to an even wider audience. 2005 saw collaborations with MC Dino and DJ Swamp on a full length album. In March 2006, her remix of Disorder’s “Deadline” was released on Acumen Records. She is now based in Los Angeles, California, where she manages Breakdown, an event showcasing Electro and Nu skool breaks.
DJ DHAMMA
DJ Dhamma, has been in love with electronic music since the late 1980’s, which began with Industrial Dance music. She’d get into clubs at age 16 just to dance to bands like Front 242, Skinny Puppy and Front Line Assembly. In ’94, she moved to San Francisco and was introduced to the rave culture. This forever changed her life. After years of just going to parties, she could not just stand on front of the turntables any longer. She began to dj in 1998 and enjoys spinning a variety of genres. While she is more known for playing driving house music, her favorite will always be techno. DJ Dhamma’s style is one of smooth transitions and flowing song progressions. You may have seen her play throughout California, at places like Future Ape, Airport Lounge (SD), Mountain Bar (LA), The Top (SF), R Bar, and rocking various parties in LA, the San Francisco Bay Area, Lake Tahoe, Burning Man and the Inland Empire. You can hear her at her new residency at The Hook Shop @ the Shattuck Down Low in down town Berkeley, or mixing it up on the goodbeats.com podcast and upcoming events.
DJ SKUTECH (Lady Lush)
SkuTech started loving the electronic music scene in the mid to late 90s, when she worked on an underground magazine called Step Up in Phoenix, Arizona as a photographer and music reviewer. Thanks to the influence of her numerous dj friends, she started working on a vast vinyl collection. After moving to San Diego with one turntable and a mixer, she was finally coerced into buying that second table and moving past house party dj to playing out and about for years. As one of the co-founders of Vinyl Elements, SkuTech helped throw multi-genre and live art parties that heads are still talking about. SkuTech has been djing since 1991 and is known to throw down a wide array of music. You may hear anything from underground hip hop, house, Baltimore beats, dnb, breaks, reggae, dub, downtempo, funk, 80s… who knows. No matter what style of music she is playing, you are bound to see some booties shaking on the dance floor when she is up.
w/ Lady Lush Resident Dj:
RED SONYA (Lady Lush, Generations Events, SoCal Selectress)
Dj Red Sonya has been taking San Diego by storm since 2001, and there’s no letting up. She can’t be missed, with her mane of red hair, and her piercing blue eyes, this scarlet diva is packing them in wherever she is. She is the queen of San Diego’s house music scene, doing everything she can to have fun and have her music heard. From djing, to hosting events, from partying, to promoting, she’s a one person army pounding the dance floor with infectious beats.
